Last Friday, we finally went on our long-awaited trip to the zoo. There were storm warnings but the teachers remained positive. Five Year 4 classes went but it was that much more fun to be roaming around the beautiful Auckland Zoo. We got to see some frogs and leg-less lizards up close and personal during our lesson in the classroom with Jenny. We got to walk about the zoo in our groups freely which was the funnest part of the trip. We had to cut our trip an hour short because it started raining but we were all very satisfied with the trip as we got to see some beautiful and amazing animals. Miss Ahn got a bit of a scare when the lion decided to come right up to the glass and started roaring at her and her students but we knew we were safe.
On the 18 June, we went to the Buddhist Temple. We went there because it was related to our topic for this term. At the temple, we got into groups Each class had a different name. Room 13's name was compassion. Room 29's name was wisdom. Room 31's name was vow, which I(Sara) did not really like. Last of all, Room 30's name was practice. Each class got a different coloured sticker so they know what group they're in.
First, all of the groups did some Tai Chi, which is like exercise. Rohan didn't want to do it. Jaden shouted out that his back was murdering him because we had to do it for a long time. After Tai Chi, the wisdom group and the compassion group went for a tour. The practice group and vow group went to do some origami.
At origami, we made paper lotus. We also learnt some Chinese characters. Sachi and Ashleigh from Room 30 won prizes because they wrote the best. Then it was our turn for the tour. We walked around the temple and learned about the temple and China. Our last stop was the main hall where the teacher told us a story. At the end of our trip we took a group photo. It was an awesome day.
Last Thursday, we went to Howick Intermediate School for the Science Road Show. We went with Mr Wright, students from a few other classes, and parent helpers. We were excited to be chosen from our class.
At noon, we hopped on the bus excitedly. The ride was about 15 minutes long. When we got there, we had to wait outside for about 8 minutes. Then we got to go in. It was amazing! There were so many things to do. Some things were dangerous. For example, there was the bed of nails. The bed of nails is for people to lie on, as long as they can. We didn't go on that because it was too scary.
For the show, we had to sit on the ground. There were three other schools so it was really crowded. We watched the 'Up Down All Around' show. We saw it on their Smartboard. We learned that if you swing a cup around on a flat surface, it won't fall off.
After the show, we got to look around and play with the science experiment displays. There were so many things to do. There was also a draw to win 3D glasses and a picture. I (Ashley) went into it but didn't win anything. When we had finished looking around, we had to go back and watch another show. We learned to never to blow bubbles in front of a fire or it will make a big bang. It was awesome! After that, we had to leave so we went outside and hopped on the bus. After about 15 minutes we were back at school.
It was the best Thursday ever. We had lots of fun!
Last Friday, Akshaya, Mary, myself and Mrs. Rhodes, who is the teacher for our BEES group, visited four Enviro schools. BEES group stands for Beautification and Enrichment of the Environment and Sustainability. We went because the Enviro group wanted to see different Enviro schools so we could figure out some things we could do for Point View School.
First we drove to East Tamaki School. When we first got there they served us some Anzac biscuits that the students made. The biscuits weren't very round but they were delicious. Then the students showed us around the school. We saw some water tanks. They were for collecting their own water. They had quite big herb gardens. They put flowers to stop the bugs from eating the herbs. When the herbs are ready, they will pick them and use them for cooking. Link to East Tamaki School
Then we went to Drury School. They also showed us around the school. They had lots of worm farms and they get five milk bottles of worm tea a week. We also got some potatoes and kumara. They showed us their Chinese gooseberry bush that they eat whenever they have ripe fruit. When they are yellow, that means they are ripe. Link to Drury School
The next school we went to was Red Hill School. At Red Hill we went to the nursery which used to be the old pool, which was very dirty. They drained all the water out and turned it into the nursery which had all the plants. Some were for sale and some weren't. They served us lunch as well.
The bus went to Edmund Hillary School. At the assembly there, Akshaya, Mary, Mrs.Rhodes and I presented strawberries to the principal. Then they showed us around their school. Akshaya found a big banana leaf because they had quite big banana trees. They had made their own compost bins made out of wood.
I had a lot of fun and I enjoyed what all the schools did for us.

Since we're looking into the past this term, we thought we'd go back to Term 1 and show off our slightly overdue pictures from our trip to Lake Pupuke. If it looks like we're having too much fun, it's probably because we are. Enjoy!
